The Post Script- Duduzile Zuma Sambudla, a member of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party, is set to appear in court on Thursday, January 30, 2025, regarding the unrest that occurred in July 2021. The party confirmed her court appearance but did not specify the charges she will face.
Allegations suggest that Duduzile was one of the instigators of the unrest, which led to widespread looting and violence in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and Gauteng provinces. The riots began on July 8, 2021, when former President Jacob Zuma was supposed to report to prison as ordered by the court.
The unrest resulted in roadblocks, torched trucks, looted shops, and burnt-down buildings. Children were also involved in the looting, using force to enter buildings and stealing goods. Some looters had cars, which enabled them to loot more extensively. ATMs were bombed, and the communication system at Durban port was targeted to prevent communication. Water supplies were also affected.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) were deployed to neutralize the situation, and they worked with community leaders, residents, and community policing forums to minimize the damage. The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) was also deployed later on.
The riots resulted in the deaths of over 300 people, mostly criminals fighting over stolen goods. Businesses and the government suffered significant financial losses, and properties were destroyed or damaged beyond repair.
Findings allegedly suggest that the riots were politically motivated, aimed at preventing former President Jacob Zuma from reporting to prison. Later that night, an ambulance was spotted at Nkandla, Jacob Zuma’s homestead, and allegations emerged that he was taken to the hospital.
The uMkhonto Wesizwe Party has urged its members to attend court and support Duduzile Zuma Sambudla.
