KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has unveiled a comprehensive Provincial Safety Plan, as part of the effort to combat crime and reduce road fatalities during Easter holidays.
According to KZN provincial government, this initiative, with the support of the Justice, Crime Prevention and Security (JCPS) cluster, will aggressively fight crime through coordinated joint law enforcement operations.
Ntuli began the campaign by visiting the Masukwana area near Jika Joe in Pietermaritzburg, where he interacted with the community and conducted safety checks to assess and, “reinforce the province’s commitment to building safer communities.”
The premier also conducted a multidisciplinary roadblock operation near Brookside Mall, targeting criminal activities, unroadworthy vehicles, and enforcing traffic compliance.
In 2024 the country saw a 32.9% increase in Easter weekend road accidents, a total of 335 fatalities were recorded compared to 252 for 2023 Easter weekend. The province of KZN had the highest number of fatal crashes increase at +17 followed by Gauteng and North West at +10 each.
Meanwhile, the MEC from Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma has accepted Shembe Church’s request for a prayer along the N2 Freeway.
The MEC was speaking at the Inter-Faith Prayer held as part of Easter Road Safety Launch in Mandeni.
He said that worshiping with Amanazaretha connected them with the founder of the church, Prophet Isiah Shembe, and also added that they remain grateful to the church.
“As the Department we have received a request for a massive prayer along the N2. We subject ourselves to the leadership and spiritual guidance of the elders of the Church. We will definitely work with the church to host such an important prayer.” Duma said.
